Blah, Blah, blah....

So I made the menu, did my shopping, at 2 stores, because I am: anal, picky, brand loyal, and organics obsessed. This of course means that it takes me a couple hours (with 4 year old and 6 month old in tow) to do my essential shopping. I think that is a big part of my resistance to meal planning, etc. Honestly I usually do whatever I can to postpone going. Which often means a little more takeout and "miracles from my pantry" style meals. This usually allows me to shop every week and a half, instead of every week... with Mr. Furious heading out on midnight runs for milk & bread :)
And truth be told I HATE to shop. I mean it. I don't like to shop for groceries, I don't like to shop for shoes, I don't like to shop period. It kills me that as a "stay at home mom" shopping is part of my job description. I know you are all rolling your eyes in disbelief... but it is true. There is a reason all my clothes are from Target.... it is a one stop shop... sponges? check. Kid Furious's meds? check. New spring skirt? check. Frappuccino? check. Huge cart so whiny 4 year old doesn't have to walk? check. What more could I ever want?
Okay, okay, back to the matters at hand. Despite my shopping phobia I am being won over by the meal planning. It is such a huge relief to start my day knowing what I'm making and being able to prep earlier in the day when I get a chance... which is rare since I spend literally 4 hours a day wearing Baby Furious in a sling and bouncing on an exercise ball! Baby wearing pretty much negates my ability to clean or organize during the day! Thank god I can still type ;) So I will give it an honest go. I'm also going to plan a weekly treat to have on hand. I'm looking for something in the 120 calorie range(or 120 for half)... it needs to be rich and sickening. Send me your suggestions. I need to mix it up... 3 straight weeks of cookie dough has gotten old.

Have you considered fudge? It's easy to make at home (I did an exhaustive fudge recipe search in college and have a good/fail-proof one if you don't), sickeningly sweet, and can easily be cut into whatever calorie portions you want. It even stores well. M and I resisted the meal planning thing for a long time too, but were similarly won over. We don't plan by day, but we have a whole week's options to look over. It's such a relief to have my choices constrained. Also, I always have the right sort of meal if we need something super quick or whatever. It is a major stress buffer for me!

PS I hate shopping too ;)

here's the problem with fudge... when I was little I had an easy bake oven... one of the things I made was "fudge". It made me sick and is one of those things I have never been able to get over! But it would be the perfect thing...
I found a recipe for crazy peanut choc bar cookies, I may try those. I just made some raspberry bars, which I love but unfortunately one is not enough ... they have that little bit of saltiness that makes you reach for more...so this could end up a total sabotage!

Though not of Easy Bake origin, I have a similar childhood-based problem with many things raspberry - especially raspberry ice cream or sorbet. Sad, eh?

That's funny about shopping. I love going grocery shopping (without the kids). I find it very relaxing. I seem to be an oddity, though.

Two things:

1) I actually LOVE grocery shopping - even with Theo. But that's because it's a) about food b) done in beautiful stores where I like being and c) so laid out for me - organized list, etc. It's mall shopping, Target shopping, etc that drains me.

2) In the middle of the night I was up because Michael was coughing (have I mentioned our family-wide nasty summer cold???), and I thought, "BALLS!" Yes, what about chocolate covered peanut butter balls, or brownie bourbon balls, or rum balls, etc? There are tons of ball recipes that are all fairly easy, come in pre-portioned form, and are almost to a ball sickeningly sweet. You have endless variety in the ball world. I also thought, "Hey, you could just switch dough recipes." Snickerdoodle anyone?

Chris: Funny enough Mr. Furious loves shopping! So much for gender typing.

Jessica: Balls good idea! I though about switching doughs but ruled out oats, wrong texture raw, and then though well sugar type cookies are just butter and sugar. Maybe peanut butter cookie dough balls dipped in choc! Yum!

Can we use the word balls more in this post? I think it could get really funny ;)

There is a yummy peanut butter/chocolate "bullseye" recipe on Laura Scudder peanut butter. Well, at least it used to be on the jar, I haven't checked lately. It is a ball, so easy to portion.

By the way, I enjoy grocery shopping when I can go by myself. Any shopping by myself is relaxing to me (unless I'm in a rush)

That must be a CA peanut butter... I'll have to do a goggle search. Thanks!
