Decidedly more expensive.

You betcha. But as a horse owner and dressage rider...it's worth it.

She LOVED it. I've never seen her happier than she was driving home gushing about her lesson. I had a feeling she'd be a horse girl.

She looks ADORABLE. But yes, I can certainly imagine that horseback riding is much more costly than swimming. :) Glad she had fun.

I wrote a detailed comment to the swim team post that was eaten by blogger, so I'll just sum up and say that I think swimming is an awesome lifetime sport. I swam as a kid and so do both my kids now. (Bonus: when Baby is old enough they can train/compete largely at the same time - excellent time savings vs having two separate sports to deal with!) I will suggest keeping an eye out for burnout as 4x a week is a lot at her age though. My two (ages 10 and 7) swim both summer league, which is more social/fun, and winter league, which is harder & more training oriented, and they have gotten tired of winter swim this season (2x week).

FYI the cost you mentioned is fantastic bsaed on my experience. We paid about $1400 per kid for the winter swim, 2x a week from September to May.

I'll bet horseback riding can give figure skating - my daughter's other sport - a run for its money in terms of cost! :)

Wootini,
Thanks for the swim breakdown. She's been taking lessons 2x a week since Sept... but... lessons are not the same type of lap swimming and we'll see how her endurance is. Right now she loves swimming... and at 8... I'd like to keep it that way. At the same time I'd LOVE for her to enjoy it and find a lifetime sport at the same time. Her current teacher says it's a great club and the coaches are fantastic. Fingers crossed...

Re: riding... Seeing as the end result is a horse... I'm scared.

Wootinit,
Oh... swim cap... silicon? The hair is a definite issue and she hates (like most kids) any kind of hair pulling. I read that they are the easiest on off. True?

I rode for six years without ever coming close to having my own horse. I just loved it, miss it still. Owning the horse part, not so much.

Hi Mrs F - my daughter will only wear the silicone caps. She says the latex ones are too uncomfortable. Silicone are a little more expensive but feel much softer/stretchier and are easier to put on. I twist up her hair in a quick knot with a ponytail holder before putting her cap on, which also seems to help.

Also I have paid for being lazy about rinsing out her suits this winter and they are getting very stretched out and faded looking,

Yes - a horse (actual living, breathing, eating horse) would be terrifying!!

Well, Mother... I think we all know I'm a bit more giving of a mother than yours. I already told her she could get one in 4 years... I was really banking on her being afraid of the horse.
PS I told her you'd buy it.
Just kidding!

Wootini
Thanks!

Now I'm having the fantaasy of Ruby and I with our matched pair of bays riding side by side off into the sunset. You're probably back at the barn mucking out the stalls sighing at the beauty of it all.
