Summer Update

It's going to be 106 today.  I don't even know what to say about that.  Full on craziness this summer.  It's a bit of a hardship (as many of you know)... trying to keep our new trees alive... the expense of keeping the house cool... and just the overall yuckiness of not being able to go outside and enjoy the summer with the kids.  It just feels wrong that they've spent so many summer days inside.  You know?  But it's just plain too hot.

We just returned from a short vacation Up North at my family's cottage.  This might be the first time Mr F has taken any time off since we went to Disney at Thanksgiving.  Just two days mind you.  But it felt great, even those two days add a lot to the family.  That, and being away... not having any house stuff to eat up our time.  Family time has really taken a hit in the past couple of years, and we're having to put some thought into that.  We had one day so perfect, that we stayed on the beach for a full 5 hours, a sandbar pushed close to shore making the water shallow enough for Baby to enjoy.  Mr F said that if you told him we were in the Caribbean he'd believe you... the water was that turquoise.  It was perfect.  We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful place to visit.  The kids are getting older, these kind of trips are getting easier (and more fun), and it was really restorative.  While truthfully, these past few years have been more work then rest on these short trips.

On our way home we opened the car door at a rest stop and felt the heat rush in like a thick wet blanket.  It was disgusting and a big slap of reality.  We'd hoped it might have rained some while we were gone... but our barometer (the kids' chalk drawings) showed otherwise.  It made us all the more grateful we'd taken the long weekend away.

I got out as early as I could muster to water the trees on the hill (which bake all day) and then dragged myself in, letting the lower trees fend for themselves until it cools down a bit.  We're out of half & half (which is an emergency!) and other necessities but only a crazy person would attempt a grocery run knowing that their car seats will likely reach 1000 degrees while you're in the store.  It's just not worth it.  I guess we'll be eating buttered noodles today.... and we'll like it.

So much more.... but.... I still haven't adjusted to these glasses and I need to go rest my eyes a bit.

We are having pretty much identical weather and it's really miserable. We are in the midst of getting our house ready to sell so we can move to a house big enough for four people, and I was overcome with the need to move somewhere the hell else where it is not so goddamn sauna-like. There are only so many indoor activities to do with a toddler in tow. Taking her to our various museums/aquaria etc is like carrying an extra bag of stuff. When I have to start vacating the house with a toddler and a (80 lb) dog so it can be shown, I don't know what the hell we are going to do. I will have to read up on your house selling adventures.

Glad you had a nice weekend away! Getting away from the house & related responsibilities really makes a huge difference, even if it's only a couple of days.

I'm right there with you on the metabolism slowdown... aging TOTALLY sucks in that regard. As does a 1200 calorie limit. Alas, I have also found that to be the magic number for me. I can go up a little bit to maintain, but not much. And that's with serious figure skating 5 days a week, at least 80 minutes a day.

I'm impressed you guys are already set for back to school! I've barely looked at the supply lists. It feels like summer just got started.

The heat: global warming is cooking us. Our window unit air conditioners are not even cutting it. We've also been inside so much. It kinda sucks. Lucky you to have an oasis to visit on vacation. Sounds wonderful.

Me too. But I've got about 10 years on you...45 is going to be a bit painful this summer.

Always love your videos. Nice to see you again!

It was so good to "see" you Mrs. F! I've so missed your videos!
I love the glasses...cute look. Glad you're able to get your workouts in...I know it really is good for my mental well being.

Schools out here in California start in the middle of August too. I think it's a bit too early myself. I know when I went to school we started the day after Labor day and got out mid June. Now they start mid August and get out at the end of May!

I feel ya on the metabolism thing! Wait til you turn 50...things really change then! You'd think that one would learn acceptance by this age! Although I have to admit...I'm getting better at it.

Enjoy your one on one time with Baby, it goes by so fast!

Again...it's so good to see you again

Loving the video (and the glasses). G;ad to see you're doing well. I am finally back to blogging, but I have kept up with reading, of course. We have had extremely hot temps in NC as well. I hate it, because my little girl is 9 months old. She loves to stroll, swing, and more, but I seriously can't handle the heat. We try to get out very early if we want any outside time. Hope your summer is going well!

I haven't been able to watch the video yet, but you know I will.

This summer has been so damn hot. We also have been in the house more than out. And then I find that even on a not so bad day, we stay in because we have just gotten used to doing that.

Just watched the video. It was so nice to see you;). I feel the same way, it is harder to blog & keep up with others' blogs as the kids get older.

You totally cracked me up with the whole eyebrow thing in the middle of the video.

I feel like I had a similar reaction to my whole dealings with insurance, doctors, 'to do lists' when working on the whole initial stuff for Murphy. I seriously was so stressed out that even a phone call would undo for the day.
