have you read this?
Protecting the Gift

Good read. Totally changed my perception of my children's safety. LOVED it. cherish it. recommend it to anyone with kids.

(the author, Gavin de Becker was on Oprah last season I think...talking about the gift of fear)

I actually bought that book when he was first on for it maybe before I had Kid... and never read it! I'm always meaning to and then I guess I start reading Amish books instead ;) But I always remembered what he said about and his message really impacted me.

oops had to edit out Mr F's politics ;)

Katieo,
correct me if I'm wrong but isn't one of de Becker's points that if all strangers are painted with "danger" then your child doesn't learn how to identify (re establishing instincts etc) a helpful person should they actually be in danger? I'm pretty sure he was talking about that (though it has been years) and it made so much sense to me.

Plus having lived in NYC with millions and millions of people impressed upon me the very real fact that the VAST majority of people are good people.
Not too mention how many kids I saw going to school on public transportation... I have no idea why that became a big deal he is certainly not the first.
And I wholeheartedly concur with the mother's comment about cable... so true.

I totally agree! We've gotten to where we live in bubbles and are afraid to step out of them. It's nuts.

A mom friend of mine could not believe that I wasn't worried where B was one afternoon. I was like "he's got his phone and ID. He can call me or someone else can if there's a problem." and I knew how to get in touch with him. The biggest thing was it wasn't like he was far. He was walking to the Shoppette (like a 7-11) which is just down the road. And we live on base even!

I really enjoy Penn & Teller's take on things...many things. I actually quoted them to friends as to why I would not sign my boys up for cubscouts. But that is another issue.

I also agree with the cable connection, too. Never thought about it until now, but it's true.
