Regret

Skating on some kind of post house offer delirium, Mr F & I walked out of IKEA's "As Is" room amidst the blaring loudspeaker announcing closing, and checked out with these....

The 60s element of our potential new home obviously got to our heads because:

they are non-returnable
they are, in non-Ikea surroundings, clearly ugly
they are also filthy and slightly damaged

Sure they were 50% off... but people... they were still $300! What the?!

Upon seeing them in the garage, an hours worth of regret had set in and I said...

"This was a big mistake!"

"We got caught up in the moment." Mr F responds softly.

"We?!! You are the one who wanted them! You better LOVE them!" I say somewhat hysterical.

A half hour later...

"You know, it really kills me, because it's the exact opposite of what I'm trying to achieve." I say to Mr F.

"I wanted playful and fun.... not.... hideous."

Oh, Mrs. F, I feel you.

The Ikea As-Is section is the devil's playground... Adam and I have spent way too much time in Ikea lately (on one special day we did Paramus, then Brooklyn... and then Paramus again...oy) and the siren song of deeply discounted floor display merch is just too strong sometimes. We've already gotten our coffee table, TV stand, and dining chairs there, and I fear we're on the way to just recreating the damned store in our apartment. This must end.

Damn, I hate that feeling of regret. That's the problem with things you can't return. I almost always feel regret over purchases.

You know what, though...those chairs will look good. I know you will pull it off.

julie,
I'm going to have to...
The thing is the family room is probably the last room I wanted to have to decorate since it's just a hodge podge of stuff we've bought & inherited and no one but kids will see it. It also will require the MOST money when we do it... new couch, TV, etc. Ah well. Hopefully some curtains will help tie the red in... did I mention our couch is our inherited camel colored (with nail head detailing) leather couch... could not be more clashing with those chairs!

HC,
Ikea... always the double edged sword. I went in just to window shop for rugs & curtains... left with a complete set of Star Trek chairs!

Dang. Dang dang dang.
Maybe in the playroom? Do you have one of those???

If you wander out to the garage, you'll see the chairs are gone. I figured since we bought them at (after) closing, if I was waiting when the store opened in the morning I would stand my best chance for mercy on the no-return policy.

The girl was VERY sympathetic, could relate, and WANTED to help me...

But, no dice. they'll be back "home" tonight...

What about one for each of the girls rooms. Recovered in some fun fabric. They look like they could be comfortable for reading a book. Just an idea. LOL

I like Karen's idea - what about selling them online? or newspaper classified (augh)?

I kind of like Karen's idea of re-covering them and putting them in the girls' room. They'd be cute in...um...shit. I don't know. Nevermind.

How do say this?

Ikea sucks.*

They are now the largest user of forest products in the world, most of which is turned into cardboard crap that won't last more than a couple seasons instead of building furniture that lasts a couple generations.

Going into an Ikea is a claustrophobic nightmare. Once you get in, you must zig zag your way out of the maze they have built. I just cannot do it. I went in once and will not likely go back.

*(With the exception of their lighting.)

Maybe a big rectangular pillow could hide their odd shape?

Recover them?? With some fun fabric??? I like the idea of them in the girls room's....I always loved having a cozy spot to read and it looks like they could be comfortable? No?

Whatever you do, it'll be great....you have special gift!!!

I think first up we are going to try and sell them on Craigslist. If we clean them up... maybe we can get back what we paid?!

They are just plain hideous. I don't know if recovering them is even worth it cost wise.

Gah!!

Mr F is never allowed in the As-Is room again. Period.

Bob,
Yes, I read that about the lumber. We had a hardcore boycott going after we moved from NYC... we were just sick of it. But, I'll give Ikea some props that not everything is disposable. They've done a lot to make kitchens affordable, etc. We've got Ikea office furniture that we've had in use for about 15 years, and a 10+ year old bed frame that is still going strong even though it's been taken apart and reassembled 5 times. Having said that, we prefer *real* furniture when it comes to things that take a hit... living room, dressers, tables and dining chairs. We'd much rather hit the antique fair for solid wood and not particle board. And a good couch, while more money, is actually comfortable... something, in my experience, you just can't get at Ikea.

They look fun! I have had my share of buyers remorse, whip up some pillows and throw them on! That's what I would do. Either a dun pattern or go with a neutral color like a linen or burlap. I know you Mrs. F, you will make it fabulous!

Call me crazy, but aside from the dirty, I kinda like them.

I love their Swedish meatballs and their cheap breakfast - and I can't pass Potomac Mills going from DC to Myrtle Beach without doing a IKEA run through. When people can't afford Ethan Allan or Henredon Ikea helps.

My thoughts were recover with some funky 60's-70's type fabric .... or sell online, maybe you'll recover most of what you paid.
I too have fallen prey to the as-is at ikea, thankfully I now live about 1500km from the closest one.
