Take a moment and get the Tornado app from the Red Cross (it is FREE). You can put in multiple locations (home, work, school) so that you can monitor all your locations. It will send you an alert if there is a severe weather warning and sound a siren if there is a tornado. There is no location in the continental US that is safe from tornadoes. There are an average of 1000 tornadoes PER YEAR in the US ( you read that right: ONE THOUSAND). Yesterday, the Tornado app alerted me to a Severe Thunderstorm warning before the radio or the National Weather Service.
Also, you can sign up for severe weather text and email alerts from The Weather Channel (FREE). If your phone is dead, etc, you will still get email updates so sign up for both!
Please take severe weather warnings seriously. Advanced warning is critical to survival.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all those families who have lost their children in the Oklahoma tornado. I cannot begin to contemplate the horror of waiting through a search and rescue. I hope survivors will still be found.
I will update this later with a list of simple things you can have on hand. You can also search back on my blog to find a comprehensive list.

shit i know.
I had been thinking of you and hoped you are doing okay. I know it must have scared you even more since you know the unthinkable can happen. And did for you last year.
by the way, I am both the 'snowman' julie and the '2 kids fishing' julie. It's the same me. I have 2 different emails associated with this for some reason since i had to use a different email to join an Asperger parent message board. I can't be bothered to flip back and forth. Just know it's always me.
Was thinking about you too. So sad.
It's so tragic. I can't stop thinking about it.
Hope you're doing ok.
I live a couple hours from Moore, my sister lives right on the outskirts of Moore it is devestating she said. I can't even watch the news. I downloaded the app thanks for that bit of info.
Andrea,
Oh, I'm so glad that your sister is alright. What a horrific situation, I'm sure it's extremely unnerving for her to see it all the time.
Thanks for all the concern, everyone. I was doing alright, still extremely upsetting... mostly in the I take this shit SERIOUSLY... and I just had an empathetic response for those parents. I just can't imagine not being able to get to my kids and not knowing if they were alive (for hours!). My storm PTSD has been getting much better, thankfully we have barely had any weather of any kind this spring. Last year my nerves could barely take *wind* (I'm completely serious) so it's definitely getting better.
