Oh Good Grief

Um... I mean... Oh Goodie.

Look what I found waiting for me this morning:

We are off this week from Co-op, so my ONE day without all 4 kids we are stuck at home in the snow. Also the painter is still here so we are confined to one room, can you say CRAZY????

It is going to be a long day ladies!

I don't in general even mind the snow days but she only just had one day back and now the whole rest of the week is off. If I had known that I'd have had 18 days off (minus one) we would most certainly have gone somewhere!!!

Emmy,
I'm doing a whole bunch of homeschool research. What kind of methodology are you using? Do you know anyone using the Charlotte Mason approach? I know you gave me your email in a post once but I can't find it!

katieo said...

may the force be with you. Funny that you're talking about homeschooling in the same post, LOL!

(and btw- I'd be interested in the research you've done, maybe sometime you could post on what you've found or let Emmy give her 2 cents? Just a thought...)

Katieo,
oh believe me... the irony is not lost on me! ;)

To be honest I find the research both exciting and overwhelming. There are so many different methodologies out there. I'm excited about finding the right fit for her but it is really hard to know for sure what that is and not spend a ton trying to research them.

Oh by the way next Tuesday I'm going to be writing a debt post... so get ready for that one!

Good luck not getting cabin fever today!

Cara,
thanks... I need it. It is actually Baby who is driving me crazy and I wouldn't have gotten rid of her anyway!

That never happens here unless there's a hurricane. knock on wood...

Mrs Furious said...

Michelline,
We've had more snow days this year than any other year that I can remember!

If I had known this was going to happen I would have stocked up on my special treats yesterday! ;)

Yes, there are a lot of people in Jackson who use Charlotte Mason. I kind use an ecclectic approach, alittle bit of everything. I use pretty standard workbook type stuff for the basics, we read a ton, they all play and instrument( or will in time in Ella's case) and we do some unit study stuff etc...whatever works and seems interesting. My email is emilyjwilliams74@sbcglobal.net

Another note, the first curriculum I used was called Sonlight and I really liked it, my sister in law is going to use it. I didn't keep up with it because my kids age gaps made it too much for me to do, but it is a great curriculum.Konos is also cool, it is a giant unit study. lots of hands on stuff that kids love. There is a curriculum show coming I thin to Novi or somewhere that way soon,I can't remember the exact date because when my friend asked me if I wanted to go I looked and it was a weekend I was working. Rainee is a freshman this year and she is taking American and British lit at our co-op, sign language, band, and Physical science. At home she is using an awesome new curriculum for Algebra called Teaching Textbooks, and Christian Light for Bible and Social Studies. Conner does Reading, math, lang arts, bible, science and social studies with Christian Light and does all day at co-op on Wed which is art, hands on science, history unti study and creative writing along with violin lessons and karate. Langston is just doing a big mixture of different workbooks and lots of easy reading books and goes to preschool at co-op.OK, probably more info than you ever wanted to know...

OK,I am just going to take over today... I found the info on the curriculum fair, it is Sat 3/15/08 at the Williams Costick Activities Center 28600 Eleven Mile Rd on Farmington Hills. It is from 9:30 to % and is 10$ admission. The phone number is 1-877-200-3357 and there is a web site at www.homeschoolingworks.com
Sometimes it is nice to look at things in person and talk to people there.

emmyjw said...

that would be 9:30 to 5, not %

Mrs Furious said...

Emmy,
Thanks! I definitely go to the curriculum fair. That is really helpful.

I'll email you... I want to know more about what the co-op is. We have Conlara (that school/homeschooling school) here but I don't know about a formal co-op like what you are talking about.

Have you come across the "Thomas Jefferson Education" book? It's a good resource if you're considering homeschooling in a big picture sort of way.

(...Now I'll go gear up for the debt post...)

I just wanted to chime in and say I was homeschooled from 2nd grade through highschool and loved it, I encourage you to go the book fair because there are so many curriculums out there and you need to see as many as you can. Its been eight years since i graduated but I do recall using sonlight in the early elementary grades and my favorite math program was Math you See because Im a visual learner and this had videos and it was fun eww now I need to go puke I just said fun and math in the same sentence.
ask any questions if you want.

Mrs Furious said...

Katieo,
I found this SITE but I can't find the book at our library. Is it the book they mention here?

Andrea,
Oh good to know. Yes I'll definitely go to the fair. What's hard is that she is only 5 so I don't entirely know what her learning style will be yet. I suppose I'll have some trial and error. I imagine it will be hard not to be drawn to the curriculum that I would like! ;)
I'll post about homeschooling on Friday (I think!) so please come back then. I need a few days to try and think of my questions. But I know a lot of readers have experience with this so I want to get as much feedback as I can.

katieo said...

Here's the link on amazon, they're out of stock right now, but maybe you could request it at your library (?)

Tell me about it! Nate was home sick yesterday, I have a funeral for a dead baby tomorrow morning(like I am going to work after that) and daycare is delayed. UGH. At least he could go in at 10 (Had he decided not to take a nap from 9:30-11:40, but at least i got work done).

eurydice said...

they never close the schools here (which infuriates my boyfriend who is a teacher), they just cancel the buses... does that make sense to you?

Mrs Furious said...

Katieo,
thanks

Angie,
whose baby died?!?! That is awful! email me... I don't want Kid to hear me talking about it.

Eurydice,
No that absolutely doesn't make sense. That is entirely the whole reason why they close them here... the buses can't run.

Torey said...

Sorry Mrs. F! And no baby class to boot! I was looking forward to it too. Wondering who we'll scare off this session.

Angie, sorry to hear that you such a hard event to go to tomorrow. I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you.

Torey,
see you next week!
