Overwhelmed!

Sorry. I'm 100% consumed by this curriculum search and finalizing our next steps.

Gotta go.

Kid cried in school yesterday.

so I had the longest comment in history and puff its gone. Basiclly I homeschooled I loved it Im leaving up to my kids if they want to or not. I recommend going to a book fair and taking kid and leaving baby out(just because there is so much to look at). Take the time and look its all trial and error. Go easy on yourself at least here in TX there are no crazy homeschool police that come knocking on your door. Have fun on your search.

I've been homeschooling my kids for several years now and have found that no one curriculum is best. I mix and match several things and I pull a lot off the internet. You'll find what works best for Kid and then can add to that.
Just a thought about socializing - when you send your child to school you have NO control over who they socialize with. You're stuck with bullies and some kids who set really bad examples. As a homeschooler I choose who my children are exposed to (other homeschool groups, church, sports, etc) and it has made a huge difference.
It's not easy but after you get into a groove you're gonna love the freedom you have to set your own pace and to let Kid learn without pressure and fear of failure. In my opinion that makes kids happier, healthier and much more ready for the "real world" than the one size fits all classroom.

Sorry for the rant but I truly believe that we as parents are the best possible teachers for our children.

Hoping that the homeschool transition is smooth, if that's the direction you choose to go. Good for you and Mr. F for being so involved. I think we (as the parents now) came from a generation where our parents would have just said, "too bad, suck it up" and I'm grateful that we have more options now. The whole "our school has awesome test scores, #1 in the state" load is getting old as I see more and more poorly mannered and self-centered kids. Kindness seems to be the subject that no longer fits into the national curriculum- what a shame. Kid has awesome parents! Good luck!

Here is a link to a blog written by Heather, who is one of the best home-schoolers around for her 3 children. She has great ideas and LOTS of good advice. check her out and GOOD LUCK.

My girls school had a day last week where the parents could come in and observe the classroom so you could see what the kids were doing in a typical day. The day we went the school counselor was having a lesson in my first graders class. The lesson? Saying something nice to another student and the other student saying thank you. And some of the kids had a haarrrddd time with it.

It was really sad when please and thank you needs to become part of the curriculum rather than what is expected from a first grader.

btw, we are one of the "high test score" schools...

Marie - now that is a sad comment.

Mrs. F - my school teacher friend believes that the grade structure in schools is totally unacceptable. He envisions a group setting with multiple ages, all kids learning at their own pace - not letting slower kids hold others back and vice versa. Homeschooling is the only place you can get that result right now. I know you already see this as a good thing, but here's confirmation that it will be. You can teach them so much more and better!

Poor Kid. I admire you guys for taking measures to put an end to this for her. As another commenter said, this is such a different generation of parenting, and I'm so glad for that.
