Love the check, check :) Update on my niece,it is Guillian-Barre syndrome which is scary and probably 6-12 months of recovery, but it is treatable and MOST people don't have permanent deficits. She will be in the hospital for a while for treatment and probably therapy after that. I think you are right about food as a reward, if you have food issues, you shouldn't reward yourself with food. I also love that you can post while on the treadmill,I would lose my train of thought or fall off the treadmill,I am a clutz. Also, what is the exact name, model of your scale? I have a cheapy crappy one and I want a good one. Gotta go,the kids were promised a trip to playland today...UGH.

Emmy,
Oh I am SO glad that you all finally have answers about your little niece. And that it is treatable!

here is the scale:
Tanita BC551
it is about $139 and honestly if you are going to reward yourself with something THIS is the way to do it!!!

emmy, I just wanted you to know that I know several people who have had g-b. The one young person I know had a MUCH shorter recovery than the 6-12 months. It was really much closer to 2 months. I hope the same is true for your niece!

Thanks so much nutmeg! My hubby is a nurse practtioner and I'm a RN,my brother in law and his wife are both PT's,and sometimes that makes things worse because we always see the worst case scenarios. I hope a shorter recovery will be the case for Ginger,my brother in law has been trying to get a pediatric neurology referral for the past 6 weeks and the pediatrician was pooh-poohing them like they were making a big deal out of nothing,so this has been going on for 8 weeks and Friday she couldn't walk. They are doing plasmaphoresis as we speak.

Thanks Mrs F,I think the scale is my new reward if I can get to my next 10# goal, I mean when I get to it ;)

Emmy,
if they ever want a second opinion or UM neurologist we have really liked Dr Steven Leber (might be head of dept).

What you say on food rewards makes sense.

I will say that after 1 week of calorie counting, food tracking and Mrs F's crazy cardio - the scale believes I have lost 3.4 lbs. Now I don't believe that all of that is really truly lost weight, but maybe 1 or 1.5 lbs of it is!!! We'll see what happens over the next few weeks...

emmyjw, I hope your niece has a swift recovery...

Emily,
WOW... way to go!!! That has got to be rewarding! :)

Great posts. I agree with your thought on the food rewards. I don't typically reward myself with food. I'm not an emotional eater, I just like food. I just need to learn to treat myself occasionally to the food I want and keep my portions small and not get carried away.

I have said before, but I will say again: I love your motivational weight loss post. It really makes me believe that I don't have to accept my body the way it is just because it has always been that way.

Thanks again for all you do. Reading your blog really feeds my soul. It helps with my weight loss efforts, and makes me feel like there are people out there going through the same things I am. (SAHMing, weight loss, crazy messy house...) :)

Robin,
Oh you are welcome.

I'm glad you like the motivational video... I thought if I put it up here more people would watch it but I think I have to give it it's own post next week. People can be fickle with the videos ;)

my favorite thing you said is that "next year, you could be me" because while that's not exactly true, we all could be a lot thinner anyway! in times when i've lost weight i've looked back and thought..."i just spent 8 months (or whatever) losing this weight. i could have spent the last 8 months stressing about losing weight. I'm glad I spent the time just losing it instead". It's all in how you approach it.

Interesting - I don't reward myself with food but I am an emotional eater, which makes it really hard. I have had to ban certain things from the house as I am incapable of restraint. Take-away pizza for a start. Fortunately, we seem to be having a run of get healthy and lose weight type programmes at the moment and one of them took 18 people, mostly overweight but not all and subjected them to tests etc to see where they were really at. They also did an autopsy with Gunther von Hagens on a 350 pound man who had literally eaten himself to death. It was totally unbelievable and quite scary.

As part of the programme they tackled the participants' diets. One bloke was eating takeaway pizza every night. Anyway they had it analysed and one 12inch pizza contained 6 teaspoons of salt and 18 teaspoons of sugar (to disguise the saltiness!). Horrifying enough to shock Mr Mole into declaring - no more takeaway pizza.

I was impressed that you could talk at all on the treadmill When I'm doing the high interval I'm panting so much I am unable to speak. I did 30 mins this morning and I was pleased that I managed 2 min intervals throughout and actually felt confident that I could finish the 30 mins, so there has definitely been an improvement. We shall see what the scales say on Friday.

I've also been inspired by your story to go back to counting calories, as I had let my eating habits slip and my weight had plateaud, so hopefully that and the exercise should see results.

Amy,
Yes. I guess I mean you could be me in terms of exceeding your expectations. And really you could. Next year right now you can be where you want to be. I believe it. And if you believe it then it can happen.

Moley,
holy cow... sugar in the pizza to disguise the salt?!?!

Sure was, and I think it was pizza hut so I'm sure it's the same over there, if not worse.

One of the other programmes this week, set up researchers outside popular restaurant chains and asked people what they would typically have from the menu. They had a board set up with the menu items and the calories, which were hidden under card. On being asked the calorific value of their choices everyone was wildly under. The guy outside pizza hut chose his typical meal which came to 4,000 calories.

No wonder the west is getting fatter and fatter!

That's funny Mrs. F - I always thought I was a medium framed person as well. In high school I was always 135-140 pounds (at 5'6") and now that I'm 120 pounds and sometimes less, it's very amusing what we tell ourselves...

The point about food being a reward is a great one. I never really used food as a reward, although I think about using it as a reward forever. I love the whole "your body is your reward". Much better. Keeps you on track.

i tried to watch the other videos but for some reason it said no longer available.

I hope you had a great weekend.
