On The Road Again

We're headed down to Asheville today.
Don't worry this time I am taking the computer. Hopefully I'll get to post pics of the potential houses.
Stay tuned.

Mrs. F, just go down and try to get a sense of what Asheville is like. Don't pressure yourself to find the perfect house in one weekend with the kids in tow. That is a huge job for people who don't have children with them. Just make the goal to see what Asheville is like and try to get the lay of the land.
Also, where are you staying? If you are in the Biltmore Village area, La Paz has great Mexican food. If you are downtown, you can't go wrong for breakfast or lunch at the Early Girl.
Take care, travel safe--Asheville is beautiful! You will love your new home.

I am so jealous, I am dying to go to Asheville for its artsy vibe and wonderful history....I know you will love it!!! I agree with hicktown diva, just get the lay of the land, don't put to much pressure on yourselves to commit to a house this weekend. But if you do find the perfect house I bet you'll know it, do you get that little click that is in your head when something is just 'right'. Or maybe I'm just crazy....

Drive safe, can't wait to hear all about it!!

Mr. F here.

Lordy Lord...

It's not going well. We had a nightmare drive down—the kids were great but there was a highway closure in KY that cost us 2+ hours and we rolled into Asheville at 3:30 a.m.

Of course we were meeting the realtor at 9 and had to feed the meter at 8, so sleep is lacking for all of us.

With that in mind, Mrs F is NOT taken with Asheville—I'll let her elaborate, phrases such as shithole, The Army and "Are you fucking kidding me?" will figure prominently...

Things started out very well this morning, and we seemed locked in on a great house, but as the day wore on, we were all losing it, and the process has become overwhelming. I think we need to take a step back and reset.

Tomorrow we are looking out of town and will probably come home emptyhanded, but with some definite areas crossed off the list (most of the City of Asheville) and explore further.

Rental might be the way to go...

Oh, and our realtor is the nicest, most laid-back guy ever, but new to the area, and I knew my way around most of town better than him and I've spent a grand total of 48 hours here! WTF? Let's just say that has played a major role in the unraveling.

It's late, I'm beat and we are up by nine to hit the bricks in Hendersonville. Looks like much more for your $$$$ down there.

Checkity Check!

Ohhh... the realtor sounds like very, very bad news. Sorry about that. Few things suck more than a green realtor when you've got limited time to find a house.

Ugh.

Also, don't feel like you have to stick with this realtor just because he was referred to you by your Ann Arbor realtor. The referring realtor gets a spiff or a percentage of the realtor's fee so many times the referral is just money driven. Hopefully this is not the case, but it's the truth.

Gosh, you guys need someone who really knows the area. Did I really just use the word "Gosh"? Golly, I did. wtf.

I hope you guys happen upon something that makes Mrs F smile. Pop into one of those great Whole Food-type grocery stores down there that was written about ages ago.

Good luck and yes, I will actually say a prayer for you guys. It will go something like this: Please, please, please let something good happen for the Furious family down there. Please, please please. They will have such a miserable drive back to Ann Arbor if not. For the love of God and the children, put a smile on Mrs F's face. Even if it is a tad of a maniacal smile (but not one that looks like she is going to go crazy on Mr F because they already have their present house under agreement and she would have to live in her minivan with the two kids and though, I actually think the kids would be up to the challenge and make it a "show on the road", I do think that Mrs F would be happier somewhere she can bake. Them minivans got lots of options, but no ovens last time I checked.
Amen.

Oh god. That's awful to hear. Bad car trips are the WORST. And then the realtor and shithole parts. My friend and I were talking this weekend about Asheville and she said there's an area that's kind of more, um liberal and I was excited for you. Maybe she was wrong? I'm so sorry for you guys.

Jenny O. said...

Heather- your friend was exactly right. It is a very liberal area, which is part of its charm, I think.

And Mr. F, I hate that you and Mrs. F weren't taken with the City. It's a lovely place to live and there are some excellent, beautiful homes there. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Hey all,
liberal yes... and sweet jesus after driving through Southern Ohio, Kentucky & Tenn... let me tell you that is a noticeable thing. But it isn't more liberal than where we're coming from so it isn't striking to us personally... if that makes sense.

As for "the army"... that's my term for the homeless 17-23 year old population that is always wearing army surplus stuff and barefoot... and often addicts... we had plenty of "the army" stationed in the NYC ;)
The homeless population.... whatever... it's the goddamn panhandlers. I have been there and done that and I'm over it. Seriously.
There is clearly a reason we pay 6X as much in property taxes in Ann Arbor and you can see it around the city. No panhandlers is a good thing.

The other thing is that clearly the town turned over and then is bouncing back. The homes we're all kept up and are now being flipped. I'm sure there are some that we're maintained but they would be out of our price range (which is astonishing but sadly true).
