I use the Wilton food color gel that you can get at Michael's or similar type stores... so it's MUCH more intense. Are you using like the little liquid squeeze bottles? I think you'll probably need to use quite a bit if you want a saturated color. I have used those with royal icing but it was 10 years ago and I can't remember exactly how I did it.
