Quick Updates

Kid is home sick today.

40 days until Christmas. What?! We still have our Halloween decorations up. Time to take those babies down, I guess.

We had a great weekend. Spent time with family. Mr F and I even had a dinner out (without our Klingons). I literally can't remember the last time we went out without them (for real).

Finally switched out our god awful hall lights (turns out they only had 25 Watt bulbs in them... which explains the cave like darkness) for some new ones. Two small school house style and a small chandelier* for the entry way.(All three lights were $140 total) Golden boobs we are coming for you next.

I reupholstered our headboard last week. Came out great. $12 total. Now we just need to paint over the pepto walls so that it doesn't look like a clash-o-rama in there.

Candy cane Hershey's kisses are back. Yo!

Got in 5 - 60 min cardio workouts last week. Feels good. Shooting for a repeat. Of course, sick kids won't help me on that front.

Kid has a 1st Trimester spelling review on Friday. 40 words. Already had one tantrum (not counting the one I had when I found out). Pray for us...

*this house is getting a more feminine touch if you haven't noticed. Mr F got the last house.

We gave up on spelling a long time ago...my kid's got too many LDs for that...I'm lucky he can spell his name, despite a 145 IQ. And don't get me started on how he's doing in Spanish - can't write words correctly in English, sure as hell can't do it in Spanish...
Will pray for you on all fronts!
PS: your house and yard look amazing!

Nice chandelier. Where did you get it? Looks great!

Alexandra,
Lowes. The website is listing it at $96 BUT we got ours and it was only $76 and that's what the sticker on the box says. Pretty darn cheap!

Brina,
I like your new picture. :)

Torey,
For now ;)

trifitmom,
kill me now!

Gigs,
Oh thanks. We've still got a lot of painting to do (and ultimately changing out all the doors for solid wood paneled ones... which we think will go a long way toward sprucing up a pretty bland interior with some more character), and we need to start hanging our pictures, mirrors, and art soon! The house is so blank, that everything we do has a big impact... it's been pretty gratifying.

LOVE the small chandelier. I've been wanting one but it won't "go" with my apartment styling.

jamie,
I'm not totally convinced it goes with ours either. It's definitely a departure. But I'm going to wait to give my final verdict once the walls are painted and things are hung up... then if I still think it's *too much* I'll move it into the bedroom. It was very hard to find something that fit the space and defined it as an entry way yet wasn't too big for our relatively low ceilings. Lighting is hard.

I have looked for, well, years, for a fixture for the dining room. Finally just bit the bullet and picked one (also from Lowes) this weekend. Lighting is not easy.

so happy that you got to go out sans kids! It's been a long time for us, too. I mean, A LONG TIME.

a $12 headboard? hello. love that!

also, with spelling. I'm not sure if this'll work with Kid, and obviously, every kid is different, but when we've had spelling stress over here, we learned with Luke that writing (copying the words himself) was about 100% more effective than any other method (and we tried a lot of different things). Aural, verbal just didn't work for him. at all. but something clicked in his brain with the writing. We had him do it on a dry erase board or chalkboard or in sand to mix it up. No quizzing, just writing. Anyway, you might have already tried that, it might not work, just thought I'd throw that out there. (I wish someone would have "thrown it out there" to me way before spelling tests). Good luck!

Katieo has good ideas - I worked with a little boy that had trouble with spelling tests and I used shaving lotion on the kitchen table and also had him "write" it on his sister's back and on his hand.

Totally off topic but I just watched a National Geographic Documentary entitled "Amish at the Altar" and totally thought of you--seen it? It's on the National Geographic Channel if you happen to get that. I think they replay it every so often.

running2me,
I'll have to go check our listings!!! The Amish are never off topic ;)

katieo,
Thanks for the Luke tips. We've been using a white board and that is also the only way to go for her... that and sexy cheers (I can't wait for the day when she finds out what sexy really means... and then realizes what I have been doing all along is flat out making a fool of myself in front of our neighbors and not by any means sexy). The main thing with her is trying to stop right before the freak out tantrum starts. I'm usually a word too late though...

claire,
You are the 3rd person to mention shaving cream. Hmm... I wonder why that is so helpful... maybe the extra sensory aspect? I'll have to try it.

alexandra,
agreed.

My sister-in-law used the sand and shaving cream ideas with my niece - I think it is the additional sensory input in terms of getting stuff into memory, or whether you're a visual, auditory or tactile learner. Since nothing really worked for us, I just like to think creative spelling equals creative thinker...of course, I never tried sexy cheers. Hmmmm...
