Mad Homeschool Skills In The House

We received a book and cd with our curriculum set called "Geography Songs", and I'm not sure who loves it more... okay I am... me. (I do have some rockin' dance moves that go along with this song) I originally looked at this with disdain... fearing these songs were going to be terrible or cheesy... and while maybe they are... they are also catchy as all get out. There are several more sets in this series (including several on math facts) and I'm definitely going to hop to it and order these up. Kid, who generally gets pretty frustrated with the notion of memorizing facts, has been able to memorize the songs almost instantly... and enjoy it at the same time. We don't just now know the names of these 15 Middle Eastern countries, we can also (both) now identify where they all are on a world map. So... score one for homeschooling... because... this is not something that they are covering in 2nd grade at the public school.

Out Take:
Watch Kid's face... she is barely containing her rage at Baby in this one! She said she wanted me to put this one up so you could all see what she has to deal with.

It's about time we got a video update. Too stinkin' cute!

ann,
It took us several takes to get one without Baby running through the background yelling "Chicken!"

That is great! We use songs and silly mnemonics for everything - it's so much easier to memorize that way. There was a battle at Bladensburg during the War of 1812 that my guy needed to remember...so we called it Bladders-burg, and there was no problem... 'cause what's more memorable than funny body part humor? Hmmm...maybe I'm homeschooling and I don't even know it...

You know what I think she loves about that song so much? The "Muslims, Christians, and Jews," part at the end.
She's awesome, and so are you!!!!

I think I need some of those songs...for ME! Great job, Mrs. F & Kid!

(I think we need to see the out-take clips...)

That was ADORABLE!!! The part about baby running through the background yelling chicken? What is it with that? My kids are hooked on that word too. Sometimes they use it as a derrogatory, sometimes they just run around screaming it at the top of their lungs. Not sure where that came from. Anyway, great job with the song. Seems like it's working well. Where are you ordering the math songs from? I need something for multiplication.

Kelly,
HERE is the link for the multiplication songs.

Amy,
"The "Muslims, Christians, and Jews," part at the end."
Oh, you know it!

Kelly,
although fair warning... I just listened to the multiplication song samples at Amazon and wanted to blow my brains out! But that doesn't mean it won't work... I guess. The geography songs are much better. Thankfully they aren't too expensive, if it doesn't work it's too big of a loss.

Gigs,
Well now I'm never going to forget Bladensburg either :)

Loralei,
I'm 100% enjoying this method of learning. It works great... for me. Honestly, 1/2 the Middle Eastern countries I had forgotten since I learned them in middle school (or whenever that was). Just wait until we do the former USSR countries!

I'm with Loralei...I need to see a chicken outtake.

I think I might have just learned something. I dig this!

Sidebar: In addition to the Amish, do you read about Hutterites? If so, have you read "I am Hutterite" by Mary-Ann Kirkby? A friend just reco'ed it, so I added it to my to-read list and thought of you.

Deb,
Oh, yes, I'm into the Hutterites! I'll look that book up.
