We ended up canceling our weekend trip, just to be on the safe side.
Kid's medical history, which we had finally felt we were putting behind us, came rushing back full force.
It was definitely an unpleasant reminder.
The last time she woke up in the early morning hours behaving oddly, in a semi conscious state...
well...
she was foaming from the mouth an hour later.
So, around here, we don't mess around.
We can't.

So glad all turned out well and a restful weekend is never anything to sneeze at.
Thank goodness all is well. A relaxing weekend at home sounds nice, and hey, I Love Lucy totally wins over cartoons!
We are having licefest 2011 over here (discovered in my daughter's hair during vacation last week, no less). Any tips from your own battle with the little f@&$ers would be much appreciated- I am going insane!
thanks, ladies
lice=hell on Earth
what a nightmare!!! We did the shampoos but I'm not sure the toxicity was worth it... we still had to nitpick anyway and still had a second hatch (they hatch again in 2 weeks... so make sure you stay on top of it or you'll be right back where you started!).
Best advice is to drag a chair outside in direct sunlight... it was amazing what I had missed indoors that I could see outside! Then we just sectioned her hair and went bit by bit. I didn't find the lice combs to be very helpful and just removed them all by hand. Being outside was nice for that since I wasn't worried about dropping them in the carpet. I spent at least 2 hours a day at that and still the next day I'd find more. Kid's blond hair made it really hard to see them! If you do it everyday for a week, I'd feel pretty good that you had definitely gotten them. Then make sure to check 14 days after the first outbreak to catch any new ones if you had a hatching. If there are actual lice I don't know what to do but use the toxic shampoo... if you just see nits I'd just pick them off and avoid it if you can. I'll pray for you.
Glad everything seems to have been just some random "sleep-walky" event. Maybe a sleepy weekend at home is just what the doctor ordered anyway.
I must take umbrage, however, at one of your tags: "And when your kid finally prefers something other than cartoons...it's a time for rejoicing."
It is no secret that I enjoy Penguins of Madagascar so much that I often watch them at night before the kids watch them. I am 37.
Smitty,
Oh, I'll give you Penguins. That's funny stuff, and quality entertainment. The problem comes with sick days and endless NickJR crap. Or worse... Barbie movies...
Thank you so much Mrs F... What a nightmare. The only positive thing I can think of during this endless nitpicking is that at least her hair isn't blonde so they are a bit easier to see. We did do the chemicals due to live lice - so help me god I have never been so disgusted as I was while watching dying f-ing winged insects crawl out from my daughters hair. PTSD city. That was last Wednesday and I have nitpicked every day since then. I will try doing it in the sun tomorrow. Still finding a few nits and/or eggs, not sure. Plus she is going to sleep away camp next week... not sure what to do about that. Apparently the kid she got them from has had them 2x this summer. Grrr.
Thank you again for the advice and sympathy!!! Truly much appreciated.
PS couldn't agree more on the lice combs -WTH? They don't work at all, fingernails it is.
