You And Me Both

Yesterday when I was helping get Baby dressed, I paused before putting her diaper on and said...

"Do you want to wear no diaper today and use the potty?" I ask.

"No, I don't want to do that."  Baby says.

"Why not?  Big kids do it." I say.

"I'm not a big kid... I'm a big girl." Baby clarifies.

"Sissy uses the potty and she's a big girl."  I explain.

"I'm not going to do that."  Baby replies.

"Why not?"  I ask again.

exasperated Baby looks at me with disgust and says...

"I just want to stay the way I am right now!"

Kara is the exact same way! She has no interest in using the potty. (She's about 6 weeks older than Baby.) BUT. Her language skills are incredible. We have similar conversations all the time.

"Kara, if you pee in the potty, you can have some Goldfish!" (Goldfish are like crack to her.)

"No, mom. I don't want Goldfish. I only want my diaper." Grrrrrrr

What makes it worse is my best friend just called me to tell me her daughter is potty trained. She'll be TWO in MARCH. She just said she needed to poop one day in the bath tub. They took her out and put her on the potty and she went. She's been good to go since then. It's enough to make me want to shoot someone. Potty training is the. worst.

that is interesting. Baby also has had pretty much no interest. She has peed on it a handful of times in the last year and a half but doesn't want to and isn't particularly impressed after she does. I've tried m&ms (her crack) and no takers. Sometimes she puts underwear on but then she will just pee in them later in the day. She only pees three times a day and is dry all night so I know she's well past ready physically. I keep asking and waiting. Kid was trained at 2.5 and I didn't have to do much... she just up and decided to use the potty from then on.

I have just come off of 4 consecutive bathtime pooping incidents. 4. Every time, stick the twins in the tub, Wondertwin 2 takes a dump. Outta the tub, drain the tub, clean the tub. Fill my tub in my room while the other is cleaned, wash them in there.

I may strap them to toilets for an evening to get them used to the idea. Is that in a parenting book somewhere?

Yeah. The frustrating thing is that she absolutely can. If she's not wearing a diaper, she will go to the potty to pee. But after a while, she decides she wants to wear her diaper. It's just a matter of either dealing with the tantrums if I refuse to give her a diaper or waiting until she decides she's ready.

Kent wasn't trained until he was almost 4 (!), so I figured she would potty train early. Surely God wouldn't give me two late trainers. Grrrrrr. Maybe I'm just the shittiest potty trainer ever.

Smitty,
LOL tell me how that works out ;)

Robin,
With somethings and Baby I think she is just more attached to being "the baby" and doesn't want to let that go. If you tell her how old she is she is always like "no I'm not". Kid was much more excited about getting bigger. Baby still wants her pacie 24/7 and to wear diapers, etc.

Interesting. I don't think that's what's going on with Kara. Probably because her older sibling is a boy, so they are already different, and she doesn't need to be the baby to be set apart. Does that make sense? Anyway. I think she's just being stubborn.

UGH. The Wondertwins are like little crack addicts with those things. If we keep them out of sight, it's out of site, out of mind until bed time. But, by way of example, yesterday I picked up Thing 1 to go stuff him into the car and off the daycare. I went over to his dresser to turn out the lamp. There, in a box was his pacie. He saw it. Tantrum ensued.

I have to find a way to break them of that damnable instrument. They go to bed with it, and if it falls out of their mouth at 1,000,000:00 a.m., they wake up and bitch until you go find it and stick it back in. No. Good.

Im scared of potty training my lil miss potty trained herself by the time she was 18 months but yet just gave up the paci 3 months ago. I know my lil man is gonna give me hell, and he already has the Im the baby syndrome because if we pretend to diaper my lil miss he gets addamently upset. I totally believe it all happens in time.

"
Story of my life.

By now Kid (who seriously loved her pacie) could only have it in her bed. Her responsibility.

Baby throws major ass tantrums if she is without it and I'm just not willing to tax my system enough to work through that. I've never seen a kid so into their pacifier. Santa actually gave her a baby's pacie clip... dude... I should have done that YEARS ago. No more hunting for that damn thing. Sure I'm kind of embarrassed to be seen with her in public that that's the price I'm willing to pay to not hear her bitch about it anymore.

I agree completely. I haven't seen a teenager walking around in a diaper and pacie yet. I'm surprised Baby is so late in all this because she is so much more independent than Kid was by nature... but then I kind of think that that is the reason. She needs to turn in a little more when she's not out there risking her life.

Ugh. Potty training. My baby (2 1/2hrs old) REFUSES to potty train. We talk about it and she says "No. I go in my diaper". We tried the "all out of diapers so we have to use underwear" trick. She got me my car keys and said "Lets go to Target. They have more!". She will sit on the potty for .2 seconds and really has zero interest. And, honestly, I don't really have the desire to fight her on it all day either.

This being said, she HAS to be potty trained in 9 months (Sept) if she's going to pre-k (2hrs twice a week but need to be potty trained) like her sisters did. And that would mean that I would have 2 hours twice a week with NO kids for the first time in SIX years.

Hmm...maybe there's a potty training bootcamp somewhere..cause I'd pay..BIG BUCKS..just to have it over with and done! :)

Marie -
My cousin's boy went to daycare since she worked outside the home. They potty trained him. With my son, I seriously thought about getting a job so I could afford to send him to day care so they could potty train him!

Robin--
LOL. And yes, I did pause and seriously consider that for a moment..thats how much I am dreading potty-training this "strong-willed" child. She would probably get kicked out of daycare anyways.... :)

Okay... I just think it's funny that Eli says the same exact thing baby says.. he says "I'm not a kid, I'm a boy" What's up with THAT? He whips out all manner of complicated phrases and concepts but the idea that you can be both a KID and a BOY is beyond him.

Sorry the potty learning is so miserable. We are finally back on track after the Kidney Infection (everything except pooping which is still a battle we only win 50% of the time... a phrase commonly heard around my house "Are you POOPING?!?!?!)

wow. smart kid...

isn't it funny how from an early age they are so secure in themselves? Where along the path did we decide that we aren't good enough?

Sounds like you are doing a good job of keeping her with high self esteem as many kids her age ALREADY start displaying signs that they do not think too highly of themselves.

Hey, you girl;s don't feel bad..they will do it when they are emotionally ready..Punk took soooo long I wanted to scream, eventually, summer came around when he was three or so and this is what I did:

Let him run around the house naked. Run in the yard naked. If they have an accident, it is obvious, and they can't hide it. Then, THEY clean the accident up, while you tell them that if they do it in the potty, it cleans it up itself.

Also, at that point, I NEVER offered a diaper. Just stopped buying them. You want something on when we go somewhere, you get undies. You make an accident, I am sorry. Your self control determines how comfortable you are. Just explain before you leave. "there is nothing to change into. These undies are all you have, so if you mess them up, you will have to wear them until we get home."

We had one accident out and about, and I think two or three at home, and eventually, he just figured it out...but I wouldn't have tried it before he knew, you know, like when he was needing to poop and pee and stuff..that would have been just horrible for him.

So, yeah. Wait till summer, let nakedness happen. Stop buying diapers then. It works..it is the desperate woman's advice for UN potty-train-able kids...that you just can't find in books, believe me, I tried...it took ME to figure out what worked for us. LOL

inkelywinkely said...

Oh, yeah, BTW, Punk STILL screams and cries and bitches if I tell him he needs to go to the bathroom. Like, he will go DAYS without pooping, but he is farting up a storm, and guess what? It smells fresh off the turd. Dude, I KNOW you need to go.

So, he goes and acts all crazy like he just CAN'T do it.. until he sits long enough and stops freaking out, then he poops, and goes on.

Solution to that problem? We put a tv with cable in his bathroom. LOL..no joke. He watches cartoon and gets all into them and stops acting all stupid.

I had a VERY similar conversation with my 2 1/2 year old son today. Little turkey...when there are no daycare kids here he likes to run around naked, and will never make a mess, goes potty just fine. Just does not "want" to do underwear yet.

Tina,
You know I was just thinking that some of this for her may very well be because of the babies I'm watching... to assert that she is still my baby.

inkelywinkely,
" It smells fresh off the turd."
Oh God... LOL

Nutmeg,
Funny I was talking to Baby about who has penises (of course) and I said that only boys had them. And she said "and Daddy" and I said "he is a boy" and she said "no he's not, he's a Daddy". So yeah same weird grouping issue.

Marie,
"Lets go to Target. They have more!"
LOL That is pretty much verbatim what Baby said when I tried to pull the "we're out of diapers" thing when we got back from our trip.

inkelywinkely said...

Yes, Mrs. F, it is a symptom of having too many of the boy kind around this house...you start talking in nasty man- gibberish. LOL.

I think The Ambassador and Baby might be a match made in heaven. First off, your Baby and my baby share the same name, so he doesn't have to learn another one. That's HUGE in his world. Second, potty training? I finally just had to kick it into gear, because he showed zero interest well past his third birthday, and I was beginning to fear he'd be taking his SAT tests in Depends. Lastly, he's ridiculously articulate about his reasons why he does not think he should have to poop on the potty and why, if he IS going to sit there, he needs my iPod Touch to entertain himself.

BTW, your Insides post is fantastic.

Deb,
ah thanks... I feel like I killed my mom a little bit with that but sometimes you got to say what you've got to say.
