One Car... The Saga Of Annoyance Begins

Mr F sold his car on Thursday... the same day my mother arrived with her rental car. Working out the logistics of having one car for two driving adults had been surprisingly easy. Mostly, in retrospect, because until now we haven't had to.

Late last night I sat up in bed alarmed. I went back into the office and asked "Are you taking the car or am I?". We had both completely forgotten about it.

He is... that lazy bastard.

Fine.

The bus picks up one block from our house at the perfect time for him to get to work. He does not have a photo shoot (and I believe that is really the only reason why he needs it). And I happened to have had BOTH pairs of my Target kids jeans wear out in the butt this weekend... making them a hazard to the eyes of all passersby.

Far be it from me to put my particular needs before others.

Now I have to walk all through town. Why don't I have more black underwear?!... or better yet as Mr F suggested...jean underwear.

Don't worry about me Mr F. I was only going to use that gift card I got at Christmas and head over to the department store (across town) and buy some tasteful pants. Because, unfortunately, I literally only have 2 pairs of pants... the Target jeans... both inexplicably trashed at the exact same time... which was really awkward while taking Communion at church.

Yesterday Mr F test drove a car that lives, conveniently, a few houses down from us. It is turquoise (not the exact car... our one is a hatch and has ripped seats (classy!) and is 1K cheaper). I laughed when I saw it... nervously... gauging how ugly it was. I said to Mr F "Why can't it be burgundy or blue?... turquoise?! Damn you 1995"

Of course this morning I see the value of turquoise.

Can you drive him to work and keep the car for the day?

LOL.

The thought never occurred to me.

That just might work... tomorrow.

Christy said...

Um, no. He doesn't get the car for the day. What if you had an emergency?

Christy said...

No offense to Mr F, but I think he needs to do some sacrificing. I think you have done a lot.

Christy,
Amen to that.
From your lips to his ears!

Seriously last week we had a big *discussion* where I laid that all out for him.

I told him he should make his decisions based on a "is this in keeping with what Rachel is doing?" scale.

The problem with him is that he was raised (I'm sure I'll get some flack for this ;) to believe that if you mean well that is good enough. Actions don't really matter. It is a really hard habit to break and hard to get him to see that day to day actions REALLY matter.

to believe that if you mean well that is good enough. good point. That is so true for so many people. I am tired of hearing people tell me that they "thought about doing such and such", but not actually doing it. OR better yet, just do it whatever it is...it doesn't have to be announced to me so there is room for me to have to take over doing whatever it is.

jeez.

It's funny, my parents are thinking about downsizing to sharing one car, and while my mom is all gung ho for the challenge, my dad is holding out-- those fellas do enjoy their vehicles. Maybe you should hide the keys... :)

julie,
are we having problems at the boys' school!? ;)

Haley,
It's funny isn't it. I think men are more attached to their cars. I don't know about your mom but I am much more inspired by a challenge than Mr F too.

Wow, yeah I remember Dad on several occasions when I was quite young (old house, so pre-8 years old) saying things like "I meant to doesn't count Elizabeth"

I don't mean to discount good intentions, but they only get you so far.

I say this having worked for a couple of 'nice' people whose 'niceness' didn't extend to their actual actions... They really did want and mean to be nice or good or whatever, but really just did the expedient thing.

I'm over it. Actions are the thing.

This morning was a scramble as I got a call from my office that my publisher was in town, and I needed to get my ass to work pronto—negating both the bus and bike options.

I think the bike can ease it's way into effect, but it requires me and Kid to get moving in the morning.

Mrs F driving me to work is less than ideal, since she and Baby are not normally awake yet. The dangerous ripple-effect possibility? Baby gets up early, cannot make it through the day without falling asleep, leading to her staying up til 1:00 am, which dooms the next morning for everyone...

What will happen sometimes until things settle down is what I suggested today, which is I take the car in the morning and come home for lunch and either ride my bike back to work, or get a ride back and take the bus home.

Oh. And it was fucking freezing this morning!

That goes for far more than just cars.

Mr F,
"Oh. And it was fucking freezing this morning!"
It was also fucking freezing as I walked two miles with kids today too.

Elizabeth,
"I say this having worked for a couple of 'nice' people whose 'niceness' didn't extend to their actual actions."
Precisely. I might not always be the nicest person... but I will always do the right/nice thing... no matter how much griping I do about behind the scenes.
That is why my in-laws don't like me. They put no merit on deeds only what is said... so since my attitude is bad...

The perspective thing is hard for the ADD-men. I have to point things out for Pete all the time.

Mr Furious said...

Hmm? What's Heather talking about again?

Sorry Mr F. I hate to throw a BTDT, but seriously,BTDT and I would much rather have gotten on up and taken hubs to work, than be stuck with no transportation.

Word to the mutha.
