Where It's At

Sounds like a great plan. Especially now with summer coming..there always seems like there is just more to do (ie-parks, sprinklers, outside, WARMTH!!) and be involved in now than in the winter (dark, cold, stuck inside bored). So if you get used to the new rules now it might be easier to stick to during the winter "hybernation".

(can you tell I am so not a cold-weather girl? yeah, and in the zero degree new england winters to boot)

And I know what you mean about stopping for "just one second" to check something. I now only go online during naptime and maybe again after the girls are in bed and before dh gets home. We're just to busy otherwise. The same goes for the tv since the warm weathers come. The tv is on before 9am (because its just too early) and goes off at 9am for the rest of the day. Dh and I might watch something after the girls are in bed, but no more during the sunny summer days! Its time to go outside and play! (plus, trying to get the girls to be more/stay active as well).

I'm the same way with the computer...it sucks you in. I will check things several times a day. My laptop is in the kitchen and I walk right by it all day long. I have been trying to cut back.

I need to read more books rather than always know what the weather forecast is going to be hour by hour.

It really is the contemporary mal du siecle. I feel like i have a crick in my neck from flicking it round 3 degrees to check my email status, even when i'm sitting at the computer. I express frustration about having to move the position of my eyes. Why can't the words just float in front of my face? Email is like a dummy (pacifier) for adults.

Looking forward to you sharing how to solve this one!

I'm wondering if the lack of comments means people watched the video and thought, I am dicking around wayyyy to much during the day (not that your blog is a waste of time or anything :) ).

I've thought about this a lot lately -- 20 minutes before Lucia's bedtime last night and I'm checking my FB status updates like some junkie. 20 minutes I'll never get back. I haven't unpacked the computer and don't plan on it. I'm hoping to park my iPhone on the charger tonight and just focus on Little Girl and Pete.

DING!

hehe...sorry :)

I'm looking forward to the new computer rules -- maybe I'll institute them as well (at least for the summer...come winter the computer is the only thing that keeps me from throttling kittens.)

I was really hoping to see a new carriage...or at least Mr. F with a full on beard and black hat. ;)

and I agree, real life is good.

Marie,
"The tv is on before 9am (because its just too early) and goes off at 9am for the rest of the day."
I like that. I really like having hard and fast rules... it takes the manipulation and whining out of it.

Julie,
"My laptop is in the kitchen and I walk right by it all day long."
The convenience of my laptop is like a crack addiction. Really... now that I'm paying attention I catch myself just on autopilot going to reach over to check it... it's nuts. I can be in the midst of doing something and I'll stop to go check.

Peta,
That is hilarious.
"It really is the contemporary mal du siecle"
Agreed. It's fascinating how much of a change there has been in this regard in just a few years time.

Heather,
Good plan. I really have been glad that I never got a handheld. If things were any more convenient I don't know what I'd do!

Haley,
I'm still thinking. I could go cold turkey... but... I think there is room for it I just have to figure out the appropriate balance. i will say it is CRAZY how much more shit I get done without it. CRAZY. It really highlights how much time I waste either being online or letting it disrupt my mojo.

Give me time. ;)

It's been really helpful for me to simply not turn on my computer when I come downstairs in the morning. It used to be the first thing I did, and putting it off has made a huge difference. Once I get into the swing of breakfast and dishes and getting the kids going, I often don't have time to turn it on. Then we're out the door. I think you're totally on the right track by just turning it off.

I also like my BlackBerry, because I can check email or the weather without being sucked into the vortex you described of blogs, bill-paying, research, etc.

The downside of all of this (I've been gradually tuning down my internet time the past few months) is that I miss blogs like yours and only get to catch up once a week. I also don't get to blog as much myself, but I sort of expected that when the baby became more alert and in need of attention.

I'll be reading whether you post once a week or once a month, so do what you do. (How could I go away? I'm making my own bread because of you!)

P.S. Love the light fixture at the 8:18 point of the video.

Katieo-that was really, really funny. Now I kinda wish you Furious family was going Amish. That would be so fun to watch. Oh, I guess, you couldn't blog about it since you'd be living without electricity;)

Sadly I only have internet at work right now, so no video watching!
(but I'm my own boss and things aren't quite off the ground yet so reading is fine!)

But I'm extremely interested! It seems like what you're doing is a really good, important life choice. As well as an outgrowth of the rest of the way you do things and approach life anyway (honesty, presence, etc)

Anyway, I'll have to find an internet cafe or something to see what's up!

This is a great idea. I'm in a similar boat - and have been thinking about it a lot lately. I need to UNPLUG - from everything and have some REAL "me" time. (It would be "family" time if I actually had a family - ha ha)

Deb,
I think that might be what was the dining room fixture... we're using it as a living room... it actually came with the house.

Yes to the "no first thing in the AM computer time". That is actually the first change I made and was telling Mr F almost exactly what you said. If I don't start with it I can get everything done and ready to go in an hour... versus the 2-3 that would drag on (pissing me off) as I kept getting interrupted. I actually can't believe how much easier it is to keep the house clean. Who knew?!
It's also like if I start my day with it I'm hooked all day. Once you get in your rhythm it's easier to stay off.

Elizabeth,
do you have a new job?

Internet cafe is what I'll have to be doing Up North.

P.O.M.,
Hey "me time" is good too... more time to read Amish romance novels ;)

I'm at my summer gig (ah the joys of the Theatre) in Saratoga NY.

I keep telling myself I'm no longer nomadic, I'm migratory. I hope it's true.

Also I'm supposedly getting interwebs sometime this week at home.

Elizabeth,
Does that mean you are going back to NC at the end of the summer?

Will you still be Up North in July?

Elizabeth said...

yes and yes!

Not up north for very long, but I will be there.

Then I go to my medieval camping craziness, then I go back to NC.
