Hmm...maybe bf'ing baby? Perhaps your body was making more milk then, therefore using more calories and allowing you to eat more to maintain? And maybe now she's not taking as much? Just an idea...

How about your body fat? I know you didn't like it being as high as it was..are you back to your norm?

Mrs Furious said...

Marie,
Yes I think the b'fing has to have something to do with it. That alone could be a considerable calorie burn difference. I'm still nursing but I mean it's like I went from a gallon to a cup. And my body fat is still up about 5% from where it was. I think I could get back down there but I think it is going to be A LOT harder. I wouldn't be surprised if I had to go 1200 and put in a minimum of 60 min a day. I think I had reached a metabolic sweet spot and I'm kicking myself for letting it go. I might need to have another baby ;)

"I might need to have another baby" THAT is crazy talk. ;)

I totally hear you on the finding the balance of what you want to look and feel like vs. what you are willing to sacrifice food and exercise wise. I'm sure I could look like a badass if I ate nothing but chicken, broccoli and cottage cheese, but it ain't gonna happen. It's just not worth it.

Sorry that it is frustrating. I think the lower your weight and the closer you are to a healthy weight, the harder it is to lose.

We're kinda in the same boat. I am at 140 right now which is high for me, but still in the healthy zone. My BMI is at 22. BUT, I was so comfortable with my body when I was closer to 130. Yes, I have to work my Mass off to keep it at 130 - like running 4 times a week, Bikram yoga 3-4 times a week and eating about 1400 everyday. It's not easy. But I'm happier (maybe it's vanity) but I also FEEL better.

So I'm just sayin' I know what you're sayin'.

**PS: Going thru your recipes to figure out what to cook for my bestie tonight. Tonight is her first night alone with her 2 kids (both in diapers). Auntie POM to the dinner rescue....

Welcome to my world. Only imagine you have 40 lbs to lose and the scale is not moving. (It's moving now that I'm back on WW).

Anyway, did you ask? I can't remember, but here's my advice anyway:

Try HIIT -- 20 minutes of intervals. Do 3 mins easy warmup, 1 min as hard as you can go (incline, speed, whatevs), then 2 min easy. Repeat the 2:1 intervals until you get to 20 - it works out to 6 intervals -- crazy hard at 3,6,9,12,15&18. The key is to really do the crazy hard. I run at 6 mph then walk at 3.

It's hard, but it's made a difference for me. NPR did a story yesterday on the benefits. It's way more efficient and you'll be drenched in sweat afterwards. I'm not disputing the benefits of long, moderately paced cardio (I pushed the stroller for 67 mins last night and burned tons of calories). But I'm only doing that twice a week. The other days I do HIIT (but not every day -- what are you crazy?).

"I might need to have another baby ;)"

LOL>>>I think that is the first time I've heard of having a baby as a weight loss method!!!

Heather,
I always do HIIT that's my whole thing. I do incline change though. I do 60 mins... but my incline change is based on it and I go up to maximum 12% incline. I can't really talk. It's intense. Seriously always drenched in sweat. But 20 min is absolutely not enough of a calorie burn for me because I don't weigh enough to burn much.

Robin,
"It's just not worth it."
That's the thing. I have a certain lifestyle that is more important to my overall happiness than being 19% body fat.

P.O.M,
I'm happy to hear someone else has to bust it as hard to get the results they want. I guess I have to decide how badly I want it. What's frustrating is knowing that once I get there I then can ease up (a bit) since I'm leaner and my metabolism is back up. It's just getting there.

Marie,
Hey if it works it works ;)

The flip side of nursing: you'll hold onto about five pounds as long as you nurse, no matter how much you nurse. Your body automatically stores a little extra in case of emergency. That's why the last five pounds can be murder to lose, and they melt right off when you wean. In theory.

Well, interestingly enough, everything you talked about is what I am going through TODAY!

--initially lost 20 lbs. 2 years ago instead of the 10 I planned on. LOVED the low weight and maintained it until this spring when I put on 8 lbs.

I've taken off about 3 but the last 3 days the scale has gone UP each day (.1, .5 and today, 1.1 .....) WTF?

I'm eating 1400-1500 calories per day and working out 6 days a week (running, elliptical, strength).
The weight FLEW off last time like this. Now, gaining? I just finished my period so it's not that....

ANYWAY, your video was timely! I'm basically at the weight I wanted to be at years ago and the weight I normally settle at. But I've been lower! And it was GREAT! I'm 40! Is this it? I'm not really interested in doing any more than I am now, esp. with the calories! I'm hungry as it is!

So, I feel ya!

Hmmm...curious...

I'm not losing weight either...but I think that's because I'm eating ice cream sandwiches and drinking wine.

just wanted to let you know I haven't had time to read your blog in a long time....but I'm back and I missed ya.

Thanks for dropping in Sunshine Mom!

Ms Flusterate,
Interesting.
"The weight FLEW off last time like this. Now, gaining?"
That is exactly what is going on with me. I can't believe it. I'm really doing exactly what I did before.

Deb,
Having never weaned I don't know what will happen. Give me another year and then I'll report back!

Haley,
It's curious alright.
Off to Target...

I KNOW!!! What the hell is going on???

I also know I'm not "cheating" as I have old food journals as PROOF!! Proof this all worked very well 2 years ago. What the f is different?? Did I turn 40 and everything just...change?

The funny thing is that had I not stepped on the scale each morning the last 3 days (I did not do so today in protest), I would have bet money I was rockin' it hard core and was down down down.

Sheesh. I am regrouping at the moment.

You may experience that "whoosh" - no loss and then like 3 pounds all at once - so don't be too discouraged.

The 20 minute intervals are more about getting the hormone rush than calorie burn. Believe it or not, the calorie burn isn't as important. Might not hurt to try it for a few weeks - and make sure your hard intervals are really, really, REALLY tough (can even do just 30 seconds).

And, I assume you are doing some strength stuff if you are doing JM - but if not, adding some pushups, squats, etc, will definitely boost that metabolism.

And, last point I swear, sometimes serious calorie cutting backfires (body wants to hold onto the fat because it's starving!). Add a little good fat (avocados, nuts, or coconut products, perhaps) to add a few calories and the satiating fat. It often helps.

Hang in there.

I have to work out like this:

30 mins I do incline and speed training

40 minutes running, upping my speed at intervals but not so fast that I feel like I'm going to die...I find if I do that I lose my steam and have a hard time finishing the work out.

30 minutes, again, of aforementioned incline speed training

I have no idea how many calories I'm eating, I'm just trying to be sensible...if I want a cookie, I have one, I hardly eat carbs at night and NO SODA. AT ALL. EVER. That part is awful but I'm at 155 right now at 5'10"....down from, what, like 183-ish...I have to work out everyday to maintain this weight, but I love it and wouldn't give it up for anything.

I know that you will find your sweet spot, I think you look great in all your pictures and video.....but its about how you feel and you'll find the combination that works for your body....hang in there!!
